We would never condone underage drinking, however, home-grown “puppy cocktail” brand, Puptails, are vet-approved broth-based cocktails made with hormone-free Australian chicken, and contain nothing but human-grade ingredients. Their adorably named cocktails, Barkerita (spirulina-based) and Cosmopawliton (beetroot-based) have an extra dose of collagen for strong hips and joints, and can be found in BYOP in Central.

Rosewood

Yes, pet-friendly beer and prosecco do exist! Although there obviously isn’t any real alcohol involved (and please don’t ever give your pets real alcohol), you can let your best friends join in special occasions with Rosewood’s Bottom Sniffer Beer for dogs ($118 for a two-pack), or some pet-friendly Champaws ($59) and Pawsecco ($118 for a two-pack). The latter two are made from infusions of elderflower, ginseng, and natural herbs. Naturally, neither of these contain any grapes, and are therefore safe for both cats and dogs. Why not grab a bottle or two to celebrate your next party in style?

The Tappy Paws

The Tappy Paws make a beautiful Woodland Moss Cake, which always goes down a treat at a doggie get together. Their cakes come in four- or five-inch sizes, ranging between $550–$660, respectively, and need to be ordered at least two weeks in advance, otherwise, an $80 rush fee needs to be added.
If you were looking for some other goodies for your doggie event, you can order some CBD treats or even a personalised treat jar, with your pet’s name on the tin!
To order your treats, visit their website, or visit the following retail points across Hong Kong to pick up some readily available cookies.

Woof Fit Pup Tails

Woof Fit Pup Tails is seriously understated and really does not get enough credit. Although their products may not look like much to us humans, the dogs definitely approve, and it’s what goes into the cakes that counts! Cakes can be tailor-made to suit each pup’s individual needs and are made from human-grade organic meat, fruits, and vegetables, depending on whether you want a sweet or savoury cake.

We’ve had one happy customer tell us it’s the “best canine bakery in Hong Kong” and judging from the way these treats go down with our dogs, we can definitely guarantee your pup will woof it too!

Dehydrated

As a general rule of thumb, the closer your pet’s diet is to their natural diet in the wild (i.e. meats, raw bones, fats), the better it is for their health. Dehydrated treats such as jerky and other air-dried meats are probably the closest thing that resembles a carnivorous scavenging diet, and here are just a few favourites that fall into the category.

🐾

The Dog Pantry

The newest arrival in the Hong Kong healthy pet treats scene is The Dog Pantry, run by sisters Stefanie and Natasha Lock. The sisters set up their very own dog treats business with the belief that treats should be nutritionally positive, and come from the most natural products in order to improve your dog’s health and well-being. Their meats and organs are all preservative-free, and gently dehydrated over a long period of time to ensure maximum nutrient retention. It’s exactly what it says on the package—nothing ruff, just the good stuff! All treats are made to order to guarantee your pup gets the freshest treats around, and free delivery is included in orders over $300! Send them a direct message on Instagram to order now.

Gem’s Kitchen & Bakery

Another local doggie bakery we’re loving is Gem’s Kitchen & Bakery. Not only do you save 20 percent when you reuse your container, but five percent of profits also go towards a local animal shelter at the end of every month, and we just love an initiative that gives back to the community! Currently, the shelters that will receive donations include Villa Kunterbunt, Lifelong Animal Protection (LAP), and Paws United Charity (PUC). Why not check out their Ahi So Cheesy ($12) or Chicken Yoghurt Nuggets ($11) and support a good cause?

If your pup is a fussy eater, rest assured that all the ingredients are listed on their website. They will also hold the occasional taster session, so be sure to follow them on social media to keep your eyes peeled for the next one! Self pick-up and delivery available online.

🐾

Dom’s Dog Delights

Dom’s Dog Delights was founded by Dominique Artigolle in May 2021, after he realised there was a gap in the market for dog treats without chemicals, additives, colouring, and seasoning—just plain, simple, nutritious goodness. He started his homemade dog treat range with chicken and beef nugs made from internationally sourced meat and has since expanded it to include fish or peanut butter bonbons and turkey jerky bites.

All the treats are made from pure protein which is air-dried in the oven for over 12 hours and then recooked at a high temperature to kill any germs—so you know your furry friend is going to get the best quality and taste possible! Besides improving their lives with delicious treats, Dom’s Dog Delights also actively supports the Hong Kong dog community by donating 25 percent of profits to local animal shelters, specifically Sai Kung Stray Friends Foundation. Send in your order request through WhatsApp.

Japan Premium

There are lots of fishy treats out there, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they have to be, well, fishy! Fish treats by Japan Premium can be found in Petline and are a favourite amongst our sample group of doggie friends. Should your doggo not like fish, they also offer a range of other dehydrated meats which go down a treat. Petline also stocks another brand for just $49, and—while we probably won’t recommend actually doing it—they look good enough for us humans to snack on, too!

Freeze-dried

These are the best alternatives to raw meals, especially if you’re travelling and need something easy to store, or are just too busy to prep the meals from scratch. Freeze-dried food is easy to pack, you don’t have to worry about anything thawing all over the place, and they’re also great for if you ever go camping—simply add water or serve up as is!

🐾

Northwest Naturals

Another great nutritious raw diet brand for both cats and dogs, Northwest Naturals’ products come in a variety of freeze-dried treats, raw frozen food, natural bars, nuggets, kibble, and chub sticks—tubes of raw meat that can be served as a balanced meal—making it easier than ever to provide your pet with the very best in nutrition. Another plus? A lot of Hong Kong’s online stores stock them, so these are super easy to order for delivery!

Stella & Chewy’s

This brand has grown in popularity for both dog and cat owners, and can be found in most pet stores across Hong Kong these days. It’s chosen for its raw, natural, and protein-rich ingredients, so your pet can have all the wonderful nutrients found in their natural diet, but in the form of patties, morsels, or kibble—in other words, without all the hassle of having to go out and hunt the animal yourselves!

When this editor’s beagle fell seriously ill and refused to eat anything, he still never turned down a patty from Stella & Chewy’s. With so many flavours to choose from, you can guarantee there’s something that will suit your pet’s tastes!

Fresh meals

Many owners opt to provide their pets with the very best in pet nutrition, but with such busy schedules, it can be hard to find the time to prepare nutritious meals for oneself, let alone anybody else! No worries though, because here are some great options for fresh pet meals.

🐾

Dogs Day

Every dog’s needs are different, depending on their size, age, gender, and activity levels, so how do you ensure your dog is getting the nutrition it needs? That’s where Dogs Day comes in: This company will calculate your dog’s nutritional needs based on their profile, then come up with his very own menu, and even deliver these meals to your door! They take out all the guesswork when it comes to ensuring that your dog gets all the nutrition it needs; at the end of the day, the toughest thing you need to do is rip open the pack and serve. You can do a one-time purchase for $533, which includes 14 meals of beef, fish, duck, and venison, or subscribe to save 20 percent on fresh home-made pet meals.

🐾

FurryGreen

Our most exciting find for home-made pet meals is this wonderful initiative, FurryGreen, which aims to fight food waste and tackle climate change, whilst providing nutritious meals for your pets. Talk about being ambitious, eh? All meals are made in Hong Kong and sourced from trusted local butchers, and up to 40 percent of their products are made from upcycled ingredients, such as offal and beef tongue—parts which would ordinarily be discarded by butchers and gone to waste.

Currently, you can purchase FurryGreen’s products through their Facebook page, but they have recently secured an industrial lot and will soon have their very own workshop and kitchen, so watch this space!

🐾

Meal Rical

Another local favourite for pre-packaged meals is Meal Rical. You can find this upon checking in at the Hyatt Centric for a “dogcation” (staycation with your furry pal) for your dog to enjoy during your stay.
All of their meals are made from fresh, human-grade ingredients in Hong Kong, and comes in 5 flavours (beef, lamb, fish, duck and chicken)—available for delivery and pick up. Each 160-gram pack costs between $42–$48, and is composed of a braised meat, mixed vegetables and a carbohydrate base in the form of quinoa, millet or yams.

Order through their website, or HKTVmall.

Kibble

Feeding fresh or raw meals isn’t for everyone, but just because you’ve decided to stick with kibble, doesn’t mean you need to skimp on nutrients! Here are some recommended dry meals for your pets, which allow for easy storage, serving, and are still packed with nutrients.

Photo: Buddy Bites

🐾

Buddy Bites

Buddy Bites was launched by two dog lovers, as a way to provide nutritious meals to pups and adult dogs, whilst giving back to the animal shelters of Hong Kong. One of the founders’ pups, rescued from Catherine’s Puppies (pictured) is now the mascot to this brand with his trademark goofy ears as the logo.

Their subscription plan means that you are able to arrange bags from 5–15 kilograms delivered straight to your door! Just let them know how much you need, and how often your dog needs it, and they take care of the rest! But that isn’t even the best part! For every 2 kilograms you buy, 1 kilogram is donated to Catherine’s Puppies, with the aim to expand to feed other local shelters—so you feed more than one mouth with Buddy Bites! To support this initiative, order online and follow them on Instagram.

Essential Foods

If you’re looking for affordable luxury, British-born pet food brand Essential Foods is it! Not only do these guys provide “gourmet” meals for both cats and dogs, but they also source the very best locally-sourced produce to do so, supporting their principle of Behaviour Optimising Foods (BOF). A three-kilogram bag can cost as little as $190, so essentially you are paying for quality, without damaging the wallet.

The all-natural ingredients that go into a bag of Essential Foods range from orange, ginseng, and seaweed, to salmon, lamb, duck, trout, and venison, and all varies depending on the type of animal you have, and goals you are after (i.e. weight loss, stamina, or age-appropriate diets). All meals are grain-free, with 90 percent of the ingredients sourced from England, Wales, or Scotland, and can be found in various pet stores across Hong Kong.

Ziwi Peak

We’ll be straight with you: this award-winning pet food from New Zealand doesn’t come cheap. Ziwi Peak’s air-dried kibble for both cats and dogs is made from ethically sourced, sustainable ingredients. The aptly named brand aims to deliver peak nutrition with 96 percent of meat, seafood, organs, and bones in authentic ratios to mirror your pets’ natural diet. Each kibble piece resembles a little treat and the best part is they can be found across a variety of stores in Hong Kong—simply check their store locator to find the closest one to you!

Ice cream

You’d be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn’t like ice cream, especially in Hong Kong’s sweltering heat. The best thing about getting your furry friend a scoop or two? Why, the fact that this is the perfect opportunity to treat yourself as well, of course!

🐾

Gino’s Gelato

Gino’s Gelato makes for a nice treat after a walk around the Peak or Stanley—so good, in fact, that our Localiiz office mascot Lola has cleverly learned not to leave without getting a scoop of doggie ice cream from this small gelateria! For just $18 dollars a scoop, you can choose from flavours such as cheese, sausage or salmon. What’s more, 10 percent of profits go towards supporting the Hong Kong Dog Rescue! What’s not to like?

Ice Cream Mix

You might fancy picking up some ice cream for your pup, but are worried about lack of storage space in the freezer, or just having it all melt before you complete your shopping list! No worries, Pawtners stock two DIY ice cream brands in the form of Hoggin’s and Puppy Scoops. Although Hoggin’s has a wider range of flavours—such as bacon, cheese, peanut, and banana—, Puppy Scoops provides ice cream mix in more “palatable” flavours (to us humans, anyway) like vanilla and peanut.

Both brands are lactose-free and have low to no sugar added, so you don’t have to feel too guilty about serving this treat. Not only is it easy to store, but it’s also easy to make! Simply add water, mix, then freeze for at least five hours before serving. At prices ranging from $50 to $80, it’s a fair deal!

Hugo & Celine’s

If there ever was a Häagen-Dazs of the doggie ice cream world, Hugo & Celine’s would be it. They offer high-end dog ice cream in six flavours, all cutely named, such as the Lickin’ Liver, Deer oh Deer, and Magic Moose (all $88)—who doesn’t love a little alliteration? Well, we suppose the dogs won’t be impressed, but the food certainly goes down a treat! You can find all six flavours at Whiskers n Paws, so you can treat your pup while shopping in-store or having a coffee break at their cafe!

Supplements

Supplements are great but create a similar problem to regular pet food—there are just so many out there, so how would you know which ones are effective and worth buying? Again, our general rule is the more natural ingredients, with less preservatives and chemicals, the better, so here are a few notable brands used in Hong Kong these days.

🐾

Puppermint

Puppermint are the latest all organic supplements to launch in Hong Kong for dogs, and are already making the world of difference in dog health!
